The City Council of Santa Eulària des Riu has launched an information and awareness campaign aimed at pet owners, with the aim of preventing uncivic behavior and promoting respect for the urban environment. The initiative, which runs throughout the month of November, will reach the five parishes of the municipality and seeks to remind the obligations that come with having a pet, in line with the Ordinance on Ownership, Protection and Welfare of Animals.
The campaign is supported by a traveling information tent, staffed by an environmental educator, which offers personalized guidance on good animal ownership practices. In addition, useful materials such as bags to collect excrement, canteens to clean up urine and leaflets with information on municipal regulations are distributed.
Education and control, two complementary axes
Although the focus is mainly educational, the Local Police of Santa Eulària will reinforce its presence in the streets with informative and verification controls. During these inspections, agents will check that pets are properly registered and identified, including canine DNA, a system that allows to detect infractions and improve the management of the municipal census.
Currently, the municipality’s canine census exceeds 2,300 pets, which reflects the growing commitment of neighbors to the identification and welfare of their animals. This registry not only facilitates the location of stray animals, but also contributes to maintaining cleanliness and coexistence in public spaces.
Avoiding penalties through accountability
The City Council recalls that the main objective of the campaign is not to punish, but to encourage responsibility and common respect. Even so, the municipal regulations establish that not picking up the excrement or not cleaning the urine of animals on the public road constitutes a minor infraction, punishable by fines of between 60.10 and 300.50 euros, according to articles 53 and 54 of the current ordinance.
With this action, Santa Eulària reinforces its commitment to a cleaner, orderly and respectful coexistence, in which neighbors and pets share public spaces responsibly.
