With the beginning of November, Spain begins to prepare for one of the most eagerly awaited moments of the year: the Extraordinary Christmas Lottery Draw. This traditional event, which every December distributes illusion and millions of euros in prizes, once again awakens enthusiasm among citizens and reflects the differences in spending between autonomous communities.
How much the inhabitants of the Balearic Islands spend on average
With the illusion spread throughout the country, the Balearic Islands is among the communities with the lowest average expenditure per inhabitant. According to estimates by Loterías y Apuestas del Estado (LAE), the archipelago will spend an average of 42.94 euros per person to buy tickets for the draw to be held on December 22 at the Teatro Real in Madrid.
The communities that spend the least on the Christmas Lottery
According to LAE forecasts, the Balearic Islands is among the regions with the lowest investment per person, only above Melilla (17.32 euros) and Ceuta (19.10 euros). The Canary Islands (47.24 euros) and Catalonia (57.06 euros) also recorded reduced spending.
At the opposite end of the scale, Castilla y León leads the national ranking with an average expenditure of 121.28 euros, followed by Asturias (119.67 euros) and La Rioja (113.96 euros). In absolute terms, Madrid is the community with the highest allocation, with 596.4 million euros in tickets, ahead of Andalusia (552 million) and Catalonia (458 million).
The national average reaches 76 euros per person
In Spain as a whole, enthusiasm for the traditional Christmas lottery continues to grow. This year, each citizen will spend an average of 76.08 euros on tickets, a slight increase on the 73.84 euros recorded in 2024.
The data published by Loterías y Apuestas del Estado (LAE) correspond to the initial estimates of consignment, that is, the calculation made by the agency when distributing the tickets among the country’s administrations. However, the final figures could vary, since each year a part of the tickets are not sold.
Even so, the trend confirms that the Christmas draw continues to be the most popular event on the gaming calendar in Spain, far ahead of any other draw or special lottery.
A sweepstakes with more prizes than ever
The 2025 edition of the Extraordinary Christmas Lottery Draw will be the most ambitious in its history, with a total distribution of 2,772 million euros, which means 70 million more than in the last edition. This increase is linked to the increase in the number of series, which goes from 193 to 198, and which raises to 198 million tickets the amount available for sale.
Of the total issued, 70% will be destined to prizes, which guarantees that most of the money collected will return to the hands of the players. The expected “Gordo” will continue to award 4 million euros per series, while the second prize will amount to 1.25 million and the third prize to 500,000 euros.
In addition, there are two fourth prizes of 200,000 euros and eight fifth prizes of 60,000 euros each. With these figures, the 2025 draw is not only more attractive, but also sets a new record in the history of this Christmas tradition that mobilizes the country every December 22.
