Formentera has been recognized with one of the ten Green Flags awarded by Ecovidrio in the sixth edition of the Green Flags Movement, an initiative that distinguishes the municipalities most involved in sustainability, recycling and coastal protection.
The award comes after an intensive campaign developed during this summer, in which 31 municipalities and more than 2,800 hotel establishments in the Balearic Islands have participated, especially in tourist areas where the highest waste generation is concentrated.
898 points and almost half a million kilos of glass recycled
Formentera has obtained 898 points, placing it among the two Balearic municipalities that receive this recognition for the first time and also occupying fourth place in the regional ranking. Throughout the months of June, July and August, the island collected 495,700 kilos of glass containers, a figure that has prevented the emission of 288 tons of CO₂ into the atmosphere.
Ecovidrio has especially valued the increase in the volume of selective collection compared to the previous year, the active participation of the hospitality sector and the strong institutional commitment to promote sustainability and disseminate the campaign among residents and visitors.
Award ceremony in Palma
The official presentation of the Green Flag took place this Monday, November 17, in the Assembly Hall of the Ministry of Labor, Trade and Industry, in Palma. The first vice-president and councilor of Environment and Mobility, Verónica Castelló, was in charge of collecting the award on behalf of Formentera.
The second municipality of the Balearic Islands recognized in this edition has been Capdepera, with 922 points. Both join the list of sustainable localities of the archipelago, along with Sant Antoni de Portmany, Alcúdia, Palma, Calvià and the Waste and Energy Consortium of Menorca, which have revalidated their Green Flag.
A sustainable island model
With this achievement, Formentera reinforces its commitment to a sustainable and responsible island model, where collaboration between government, business and citizens is key to moving towards a greener future. Ecovidrio’s recognition highlights the collective effort of the island to reduce waste, improve recycling management and consolidate itself as an environmental benchmark in the Mediterranean.
