The Consell Insular de Formentera has put out to tender the rehabilitation of the road surface and improvement of the rainwater network in the 3.9-kilometer stretch of the PM-820 road between La Savina and the Can Rita gas station. The project, promoted by the Conselleria de Economía, Territorio e Infraestructuras, has a budget of 2.6 million euros and is part of the road agreement signed with the Balearic Government.
The project represents a new step in the modernization of the island’s main road infrastructure, a key corridor that supports a large part of the daily movements of both residents and visitors.
Four months of work to reinforce safety and durability
The project is expected to take four months to complete and is designed to improve safety, the durability of the road surface and the functionality of the road. According to the second vice-president and councilor of the area, Javier Serra, this is a strategic intervention to “improve road safety, optimize drainage and modernize a fundamental section for mobility on the island”.
The works include the complete rehabilitation of the road surface and shoulders, the renewal of the horizontal and vertical signage, as well as the undergrounding of services and the replacement of shoulders. Work will also be carried out on the rainwater network to ensure more efficient drainage and prevent flooding during heavy rainfall events.
Intervention at a hot spot: the Porto-Salè crossroads
One of the most outstanding elements of the project is the intervention at the Porto-Salè intersection, an area with a history of accidents due to the existing slope.
The project will correct the grade to facilitate access, improve the field of vision and reorganize the drainage system, which will significantly increase safety at this critical point of the road.
New pedagogical radars to reinforce security
The plan includes the installation of two solar-powered digital educational radars, located before and after the Porto-Salè intersection. These devices will project variable messages to drivers in order to encourage safer driving and reduce speed on a particularly sensitive stretch.
A boost after years of no improvement
For Serra, this tender represents “a step forward in the consolidation of a safer road network, after many years without any improvement or maintenance work”. The forecast is that the works can begin next January, provided that the awarding progresses according to schedule.
The project specifications, once the public information period is over, are available on the Public Sector Contracting Platform, where interested companies can submit their bids until December 9 at 7 pm.
