Intensivist Eduardo Escudero takes over as the new manager of the Ibiza and Formentera Health Area. His appointment was announced this Friday at a press conference in which the Balearic Minister of Health, Manuela García Romero, and the general director of Ib-Salut, Javier Ureña, also announced the resignation of Enrique Garcerán, who is leaving the post after a year marked by criticism and internal tensions.
Escudero, ICU doctor at Can Misses since 1998, assumes the responsibility at a particularly complex time: mid-term, pre-election atmosphere and a Pitiusa healthcare system burdened by waiting lists, lack of oncologists and a prolonged crisis of resignations. His name had been mentioned on previous occasions for this position, but it was not until now that his appointment became effective.
With a long career at Can Misses, Escudero stands out for his work as coordinator of Transplants since 2002, a role he promoted since the creation of the unit. His leadership helped consolidate the organ harvesting program and promote the culture of donation among the public. The new manager also holds a master’s degree in Medical Management and Clinical Management from the UNED and the Escola Nacional de Sanitat.
The Govern has expressed its full support to the new head of health care, underlining his ability to contribute to the transformation and modernization of health care in Ibiza and Formentera. The councilor highlighted his commitment to healthcare excellence and his deep knowledge of the territory and the hospital reality.
Garcerán’s resignation adds to a long list of resignations of management positions in the last year, including those of medical director Sausan Sayed, deputy surgical director Manuel Deiros, director of nursing Ana María Ribas and deputy medical director of primary care, Sara Navarro. To this climate was added the controversial hiring and subsequent reinstatement of Javier Marí. Escudero will now have the challenge of restoring stability and tackling the main open fronts of the Pitiusan healthcare system.
