The new manager of the Health Area of Ibiza and Formentera, Eduardo Escudero, presented today, Friday, his project at the head of the institution, in an event in which he presented a roadmap based on listening, analysis “calmly” and decision making “with common sense and from a technical point of view”. The intensivist insisted that his approach will focus on improving care for “the people who need our attention” and on ensuring the well-being of healthcare professionals.
Management reinforcements and internal reorganization
Escudero explained that he considers it necessary to strengthen the management structure, given the volume of work and the characteristics of the area. He noted that the organization will have to take on new responsibilities and that management will need more support to sustain the pace of management.
He said: “There will be new positions. They are reinforcements to what we already have, reinforcements to the organizational chart.”
“Caring for caregivers” as the focus of the project.
During the presentation, Escudero remarked that the well-being of healthcare professionals will be an essential pillar of his time as manager. He stated that “if we take care of the professionals, we will take much better care of the people who need our attention”, arguing that the stability and emotional health of the teams have a direct impact on the quality of care.
Demographic pressure and increasing seasonality
The new manager described the healthcare context, pointing out that the Health Area serves 170,000 inhabitants on two islands and is under very high demographic pressure during the vacations, in addition to high seasonality and a structural housing problem that conditions the hiring of personnel.
Project continuity and recognition of previous work
Escudero praised the work of the outgoing manager, Enrique Garcerán, stressing that the institution must maintain the course set during the last two and a half years. He stressed that his arrival in the position should be understood as a continuity, not as a rupture, and that the objective is “not to deviate the ship” at a time when the trend in the area is positive.
Objectives: primary care, mental health and waiting lists
The Minister of Health recalled that the Government’s strategic lines include expanding primary care, strengthening mental health and reducing waiting lists. Escudero took these objectives as his own and stated that his task will be to ensure that the area continues to make progress on them with technical criteria and coordinated work.
The new manager claimed his 28 years of experience in the hospital and listed the evolution of the ICU: “when I arrived there were five beds, then nine, then twelve and now fifteen”. He assured that this first-line vision will allow him to make decisions adjusted to reality and to guide his management from the knowledge of the teams.
Escudero closed his speech by citing three concepts that, he said, will guide his mandate: cohesion, harmony and friendship, values that he considers essential to strengthen the joint work and consolidate the future of the Health Area of Ibiza and Formentera.
