The City Council of Ibiza will approve this Thursday in ordinary plenary session the project to expand the Can Ventosa cultural center, an intervention included in the Plan of strategic actions to modernize Ibiza and which will have an investment of 2,778,156.90 euros, as reported by the Consistory in a statement. The project will increase the surface area dedicated to musical activities fourfold, from the current 300 square meters to more than 1,200 square meters.
A key work for a building turning 100 years old
The Councilor for Culture and Heritage, Carmen Domínguez, stressed that the expansion “is a clear sign of the commitment of the City Council of Ibiza with culture and education” and that it is “a step forward to consolidate Can Ventosa as the great cultural and social heart of the city“. The mayor stressed that, with this reform, the Patronato de Música will gain space and better conditions to continue training new generations of musicians, which will strengthen the municipal cultural offer.
New floors: classrooms, offices and a rehearsal room for 100 musicians
The project includes the construction of two new floors and the remodeling of other areas of the building. It will include modern classrooms, teachers’ rooms, administrative offices and a large rehearsal room with capacity for more than one hundred musicians, one of the main demands of the Board of Trustees. New services and test booths will also be incorporated to improve training activities.
On the second floor there will be a 10 m² office next to the stairs. The third floor will incorporate six new classrooms, two rehearsal booths, management and secretarial offices, a staff room and restrooms. The fourth floor will house four additional classrooms and the large rehearsal room for more than one hundred performers, together with their corresponding services.
Improvements in accessibility and safety
The renovation also includes the enlargement of the elevator shaft to install a larger capacity elevator car and the construction of an external emergency staircase connecting the floors to the auditorium roof. The new volume of the building will be located above the Municipal Library, but will maintain an independent access at number 13, Pere Francès street, which will allow it to continue to function independently.
