The Town Hall of Ibiza will present in the next few days a report to the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory with the aim of accessing state aid to alleviate the effects of the storms caused by the storms Ex Gabrielle and DANA Alice. The damage estimate made by the Consistory reaches 29 million euros, as confirmed by Mayor Rafael Triguero in statements reported by IB3.
“For weeks we have worked tirelessly to quantify the damage,” said Triguero, who considers this action “a matter of social urgency”.
Declaration of catastrophe zone after weeks of lobbying
The measure comes after the Council of Ministers approved this Tuesday the declaration of area seriously affected by a civil protection emergency for several territories of Ibiza and Formentera. The agreement formally recognizes the damage caused by the extreme episodes of rainfall on September 30, the floods of October and the effects of the DANA Alice.
“We could not wait any longer,” said the mayor in IB3, celebrating a statement that, he said, “recognizes the magnitude of the damage” suffered by the municipality. Triguero has warned that now “the aid must arrive as soon as possible” and that it is necessary to activate moratoriums, bonuses and tax exemptions for neighbors and businesses affected.
An autumn of catastrophes: torrential rains and institutional pressure
During the previous weeks, both the Consell de Ibiza and the municipalities of Ibiza and Formentera demanded a state intervention in the face of the damage caused by adverse weather phenomena that have been concatenated since the end of September. The storm of September 30 left records of up to 236 liters per square meter, with flooded houses, impassable roads and road closures.
This situation also motivated the start of emergency works valued at 1.78 million euros, promoted by the Balearic Government. These measures are in addition to the 5 million euros already announced by the regional government to alleviate the effects of Ex Gabrielle and Alice.
