Pacma has demanded the City Council of Sant Josep the “full and urgent” compliance with the Law 7/2023 of protection and animal welfare, after the Consistory defended having made more than 1,600 sterilizations, figures that the formation questions the lack of registered cat colonies, accredited caregivers or community cats identified in the municipal name.
In a statement, the animal rights party has pointed out that the municipality claims to have carried out more than 1,600 sterilizations, but “without having registered any feline colony in the municipality”, in addition to the fact that there is no accredited caregiver, according to the party. Pacma criticizes that there are no community cats identified in the name of the municipality, as required by state regulations.
The party has regretted that, since the arrival of the current head of the area, no CER (Capture-Neuter-Return) campaign has been promoted. Instead, it denounces that “community cats are being microchipped in the name of individuals”, a practice that the party rejects as incompatible with the legal model of colony management.
PACMA denounces
The insular coordinator of Pacma in Ibiza, Olivier Hassler, has assured that the non-compliance of the Consistory “cannot be justified only by the lack of personnel”, affirming that “it responds to a political decision that violates the basic state regulation”. The party maintains that the municipality must apply the CER system in a protocolized manner and with public control.
Hassler has called for the immediate implementation of an official program that accredits caregivers, identifies all community cats in the name of the City Council and integrates local shelters in the census and management tasks, in order to take advantage of the work already done and optimize public resources.
Pacma also considers “essential” the urgent creation of a permanent technical committee, in charge of coordinating captures, returns and actions in sensitive areas. The group also demands the periodic publication of data on registered colonies, number of sterilized and identified cats and expenses associated with their management.
