Formentera lit up Christmas this Monday with one of its most participatory starts in recent years, an afternoon in which the Plaza de la Constitución was filled with families to follow the official lighting organized by the Consell Insular de Formentera, which turned Sant Francesc into the center of the festive atmosphere of the island. The event, as highlighted by the insular institution in its official program, combined light, music and children’s protagonism.
The day began at 17.00 hours with the show Igniting the dreams of Christmas, a proposal of Shows Ibiza integrated in the Mininadal, the space that, until January 4, will offer workshops and family activities as a meeting point for residents of Formentera.
At 18.00 hours, the facade of the church of Sant Francesc became the scene of one of the most anticipated moments: a countdown projected on the temple that brought together dozens of children and adults. The president of the Consell, Óscar Portas, accompanied by a large group of children, was in charge of pressing the button that activated the Christmas lighting throughout the town, a gesture that gave way to a traditional image of the festive imaginary of Formentera.
Minutes later, at 18.30 hours, officially opened the Christmas Market, which this year expands its offer to strengthen citizen participation and promote local trade. The space combines crafts, catering and social revitalization proposals. In addition, the opening was accompanied by the rocking carols of the Santa’s Band, which provided the soundtrack to the start of the festive campaign.
Christmas Market Schedule
The Christmas Market will remain open until January 11 from 12.30 to 16.00 hours and from 18.00 to 23.00 hours from Monday to Thursday. From Friday to Sunday, the closing will be delayed until 23.45 hours, an extension that is part of the measures to increase participation in the social life of Formentera.
The festive program continues this Tuesday with one of the highlights of the calendar: the opening of the exhibition “Joan Marí Cardona. 50 images. 100 years”, which will open at 12.00 noon at the Antoni Tur Gabrielet Center. During the afternoon, from 5 p.m., the Mininadal will resume its proposals with the pottery workshop “Juego de Mesa”, taught by Marta Santamaría, an activity that combines tradition and creativity and that is generating considerable interest among families.
This Christmas comes to Formentera with a diverse agenda that includes concerts, workshops, cultural programming, the visit of Santa Claus, the Christmas Concert in the Plaza de la Constitución, the arrival of the royal pages and New Year’s Eve at the Market, among other proposals. With this kick-off, the Consell Insular reaffirms its commitment to coexistence, culture and local commerce, offering residents and visitors a festive setting to share time, emotions and community.
