The surgery was performed at Barcelona Hospital, and although the player faces an estimated five-month recovery period, it was her personal message, beyond the injury, that moved her followers.

Aitana began her message by acknowledging the “other side of sport,” acknowledging that her fracture, suffered last Sunday, forces her to begin a new challenge off the field. “The operation went well and now it’s time to regenerate myself physically and mentally,” said the midfielder.

Bonmatí acknowledges mental limit prior to injury
The most revealing part of his statement was his candid acknowledgment of the toll of elite soccer. Bonmatí confessed that, in recent weeks, he had seriously considered a temporary layoff due to burnout.
“Elite soccer takes you to the limit in all aspects and there are factors that were currently preventing me from enjoying the profession and the day to day. Honestly, I felt it was a time to put the brakes on and I thought about it, but I didn’t do it and life has suddenly slowed me down,” said the athlete.
