Silvia Cano, former regional deputy and historical reference of the PSIB, has launched a harsh public criticism against the national leadership of the PSOE after the outbreak of the Salazar case and the trickle of complaints of sexual harassment in various federations. Through a message on social networks, the former head of Equality of the Balearic socialism, among other prominent positions, has accused the party of abandoning feminists and maintaining a double standard:
“Feminism is what passes for their holy balls,” Cano wrote.
Who is Silvia Cano?
Silvia Cano was secretary general of the Socialist Federation of Mallorca between 2012 and 2017, autonomic deputy in several legislatures, and former secretary of Equality of the PSIB. With a degree in Philosophy, she has worked in the field of education and is considered one
Internal denouncement: feminism as a slogan
Cano accuses Ferraz of having ignored for years the internal warnings of the party’s women:
“We feminists have been neglected for years by the party at the national level,” she points out, assuring that even leaders like the former secretary of Organization of the PSOE turned a deaf ear.“We already know why: he was too busy in other shady business,” she denounces.
He also criticizes that while committed women were pushed aside, others, newcomers, were rewarded:
“They were passing resolutions through the triumphal arch…and nothing was happening.”
For Cano, feminism cannot be limited to public discourse:
“You cannot be a feminist and a whoremonger, nor a feminist and rent wombs. Feminist ethics demands coherence between the private and the public.”
Armengol avoids questions in Ibiza
These criticisms coincide with the visit of the secretary general of the PSOE in the Balearic Islands and president of the Congress of Deputies, Francina Armengol, to Ibiza to participate in the traditional Christmas lunch of the PSOE on the island, where she defended the feminist character of the party but avoided any explicit mention of the recent scandals.
Armengol and Vicent Roselló avoided answering questions from the media, despite being publicly summoned.
“The PSOE is a feminist party, we do not tolerate machismo.”
During her speech, Armengol proclaimed that the PSOE is “a feminist party par excellence” and that sexist behaviors “disgust us and we will always fight them, inside and outside our house”. She also stated that the party has had “a few characters that are not worthy”, without specifying names or facts.
The insular secretary general, Vicent Roselló, stressed that feminism is a hallmark of the PSOE and warned that anyone who does not share it, will not be welcome.
