The Generalitat de Catalunya has activated this Tuesday the alert phase of the Inuncat plan due to an episode of persistent rains that is fully affecting the metropolitan area of Barcelona.
Protecció Civil has taken this decision after weather forecasts point to accumulations that could exceed 100 liters per square meter in just 24 hours, especially in the region of Barcelonès and, more markedly, in Badalona.
The situation comes after a day marked by constant rainfall that is already causing complications in different parts of the Catalan capital and its surroundings. The authorities are calling for maximum caution and recommend limiting non-essential travel.
Badalona, one of the points most affected by the storm
The rains have not given truce in the last hours and have had a direct impact on mobility and urban services. As reported by the emergency services, Badalona is among the towns most affected by the episode, concentrating most of the incidents recorded.
Protecció Civil insists on avoiding flood zones, not to cross rivers, torrents or underpasses and to take extreme precautions both on foot and in vehicles, since the accumulation of water can suddenly cause risky situations.
More than a hundred calls handled by firefighters
During the day, the Fire Department of the Generalitat had to intervene in more than 160 warnings directly related to the rains. Most of the actions have been linked to flooding in first floors and garages, water leaks in homes and falling trees or branches on public roads.
The Northern Metropolitan Region has concentrated a high number of services, reflecting the intensity of the episode and the speed with which incidents occurred throughout the day.
Traffic problems and infrastructure damage
The storm has also caused complications on the road network. On the B-20 ring road, at the height of Santa Coloma de Gramenet in the direction of Montgat, one of the lanes had to be closed due to the accumulation of water, which has generated intermittent traffic jams.
In addition to these incidents, there have been recent problems in public transport, such as partial cuts on lines 2 and 3 of the Barcelona metro, as well as the activation of preventive alerts in sensitive areas such as the Besòs River Park.
Risk of overflows and continuous monitoring
The Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (Meteocat) has indicated that, so far, about 80 liters per square meter have already been recorded in the last 24 hours, although forecasts indicate that the figures could increase in the coming hours and exceed the threshold of 100 l/m² in some points of Barcelonès.
Given this scenario, Protecció Civil maintains a constant monitoring of the evolution of the storm and recalls the importance of following the official indications. The combination of heavy rains and water accumulation keeps active the risk of overflows in low areas and near streams, so it is recommended to stay informed and act with caution.
