The president of the Balearic Government, Marga Prohens, has once again called on the central government for a “forceful response” to the “unsustainable” situation that, in her opinion, the Balearic Islands are going through as a result of the migratory crisis.
In a message spread on social networks and collected by Europa Press, the leader of the autonomous Executive has regretted that “while some still defend in the Islands the migratory policies of Sanchez and deny its call effect, the route of irregular immigration that grows the most is the route between Algeria and the Balearic Islands”.
Prohens’ statements come after it became known that more than 7,295 irregular immigrants have arrived in the Balearic Islands so far this year, a figure that once again places the autonomous community at the center of the migration debate.
Faced with this scenario, the president of the Govern insisted on the need for a change in the state and European strategy. “I once again call for a drastic change in migration policy, more resources for the protection of our borders and to combat mafias, to put an end to call effect policies and to request the activation of Frontex to Europe,” she concluded.
The Balearic Executive warns of the pressure that this situation generates on reception resources and public services, and reiterates its request for greater involvement of the central government and the European Union to address the increase in arrivals via the western Mediterranean route.
