The Port Authority of the Balearic Islands is studying the ports of Palma and Alcúdia as possible landing points for the waste that will be transferred from Ibiza and Formentera to Mallorca from 2026. This has been confirmed by the director of the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands, Toni Ginard, as part of the technical analysis prior to the implementation of the transfer.
The operation already has legal support and is pending the signing of the agreement between the councils of Ibiza and Mallorca. The transfer of garbage will be carried out by sea and is part of the agreement reached before the end of the useful life of the Ca na Putxa landfill in Ibiza.
Different locations for the berthing of the vessel are analyzed, as well as the conditions for disembarkation and subsequent transport by road to the Son Reus treatment plant in Mallorca. This study takes into account logistical, operational and environmental criteria.
The possibility of using the port of Alcúdia, as reported by Diario de Ibiza, is added as an alternative to the port of Palma, which was the option initially contemplated by the Government and the Consell de Mallorca. The final choice will have to guarantee an efficient and compatible operation with the port activity.
The Balearic Parliament gave the green light to the project last December 16 by including the waste transfer in the decree for the acceleration of strategic projects, with the support of the PP and Vox. Before its definitive application, a pilot test is planned to be carried out and the terms of the agreement between the councils involved are to be finalized.
