The transfer of waste from Ibiza to Mallorca could begin before next summer. This has been assured this Thursday by the Councilor for the Environment, Rural Environment and Sports, Pedro Bestard, who has pointed out that the pilot plan promoted by the island institution is at a very advanced stage.
In statements to the media, Bestard explained that the technical and administrative work to implement this transfer are practically completed. “I think so, because the work is very advanced,” he said, showing confidence that the shipment of waste from Ibiza to the Son Reus incineration plant will be activated in the coming months.
The conseller stressed that the Mallorcan plant has sufficient capacity to take waste from other islands. In this sense, he has not ruled out that waste can also be imported from Menorca, although he has clarified that, for the moment, there is no formal request. “The plant gives to come, but we can not say anything because we have not received any request from the Consell de Menorca or the Government,” he said.
Bestard recalled that the main objective of the pilot plan is to provide a viable outlet for Ibiza’s waste, given the limitations of the current management system on the island, and to move towards a more efficient and sustainable model.
On the other hand, the councilor has referred to the vandalism graffiti recently appeared in the public estate of Raixa, in protest against the closure of an alleged public road. In this regard, he clarified that the claims do not conform to reality, since “it was not a road, but a step that was on the farm,” thus settling the controversy generated around this issue.
