The City Council of Sant Antoni has begun this Thursday the demolition of the building known as Can Tunís, located at the intersection of Santa Agnès and Vara de Rey streets. This action is part of an urban regeneration project that seeks to make way for the creation of an outdoor cultural space, with the aim of revitalizing the old town of the municipality. The initiative is part of the project Regeneration of the old town through the creation of a cultural space, and has received a European grant of more than one million euros from the program Next Generation EU. The aim of this intervention is to renaturalize the area and turn it into an attractive environment for cultural tourism, thus enhancing the daytime offer of Sant Antoni. The demolished building, which was in a poor structural condition, was a construction of more than eighty years old that in the past had been converted into a house and later used as a warehouse for a tourist establishment. The demolition has an estimated cost of 39,586.90 euros.
A new tourism model for the old town
The Sant Antoni Town Hall has stressed that this project is part of a broader plan to improve the tourist competitiveness of the area and move towards deseasonalization. The creation of the new cultural space aims to attract tourists interested in cultural proposals and, at the same time, offer a renewed environment for the local community. This space will join other planned actions, such as the creation of a boulevard on Vara de Rey street and the artistic intervention of renowned artist Okuda San Miguel on Santa Agnès street. “We want to transform the old town into a cultural meeting point that benefits both neighbors and visitors, offering a more sustainable and attractive tourism,” said the City Council in its statement. With this intervention, Sant Antoni continues to advance in its urban transformation, betting on projects that promote culture and quality tourism, generating a positive impact on both the local economy and the welfare of residents.
