The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has activated the orange alert for rainfall in Ibiza and Formentera, with heavy rainfall forecast that could leave up to 50 liters per square meter in an hour. The alert will be in force until 19:59 hours this Friday. In view of this situation, the Emergency Service 112 has activated the Severity Index 1 (IG1) of the Meteobal Plan, due to the high risk to people and property. A “complicated day” is expected, so Emergencies has issued a series of recommendations for the population.
Safety recommendations due to the rain alert in Ibiza and Formentera
At home:
- Secure doors and windows and stay in high areas.
- Remove objects from the exterior that may be washed away by the water.
- Move medicines, important documents, food and drinking water to safe places inside the house.
- Avoid basements or garages and, if water begins to enter the house, turn off the main power switch.
Outside:
- Stay away from streams and flooding areas.
- In urban areas, seek shelter in a safe building.
- Avoid walking in areas with moving water, which can be very dangerous.
On the road:
- Avoid driving if it is not necessary.
- If you must drive, do so on highways, freeways or main roads, moderating your speed and increasing the safety distance.
- If visibility is poor, stop the vehicle and signal your position.
Additional precautions for driving in flooded areas
- Do not cross areas with accumulated water, even if it appears to be little, as cars may float and be swept away.
- If the car starts to be dragged, get out of the vehicle as soon as possible through the window.
- Abandon the vehicle and move to higher ground if the water level reaches the car’s axle.
- Carry a charged cell phone and sufficient fuel, and do not park on bridges, sidewalks or at the mouth of streams.
Emergencies also recommends planning visits to cemeteries, due to the feast of All Saints, depending on weather conditions. In case of emergency, contact 112.
