The community of Ibiza has shown an impressive solidarity with the Valencian town of Algemesí, severely affected by the DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels), by gathering enough basic necessities to fill two trucks, which will leave this Saturday by boat to Valencia. Nuria Moreno, spokeswoman for the Valencian Community Cultural Association of Sant Antoni and Sa Nostra Falla, explained to EFE that they feel “overwhelmed” but “very happy” by the generosity of Ibizan society. The collection day began at 9:00 am and will continue until 8:00 pm at the former headquarters of the Local Police of Sant Antoni, where 25 volunteers work sorting and packaging donations.
Solidarity with the DANA in Valencia
The collection has focused on food, hygiene products and bedding, following a conversation with the mayor of Algemesí, who requested food, milk, water, precooked food, bedding and baby products such as diapers, milk, baby food and bottles. “We are very happy, Ibizan society is very supportive and very participative,” said Moreno. The first truck, which was scheduled to be shipped tonight, has already been filled, and a second one has begun to be loaded. Both vehicles will leave by boat first thing tomorrow morning, bound for Algemesí. To facilitate the collection, a container has also been set up in Sa Coma where mattresses, mats and blankets donated by hotels on the island are stored, reaching almost a thousand units.
Acknowledgments
“Many people will have to have something to eat, where to sleep and how to cover themselves. The work we are doing in Ibiza is essential to help Valencia,” said Moreno, who also thanked the support of the City of Sant Antoni, the Consell Insular, Civil Protection and other institutions. Moreno concluded by explaining that, after these initial shipments, the next objective will be to move the container and any additional aid, “not only to Algemesí, but also to other localities that need it most”.
