The situation of institutional disorder in Formentera is breathed daily on the island, a product of the political crisis unleashed last December that worsened over the months and resulted in the dissolution of the Governing Board and has left the island government in the hands of only the island president Llorenç Cordoba and the councilor of Tourism, Artal Mayans. This brings almost daily difficulties for the administration of the smaller pitiusa. And one of the new inconveniences is the obstacle to process the sanctions for illegal tourist rentals. As reported weeks ago, during the summer season, the inspector of Tourism of Formentera has issued 17 reports for intrusion. This operation included 288 visits to properties distributed throughout the island, after the selection of 70 cadastral blocks in three different draws, where 10 irregular cases were detected. Additionally, citizen collaboration allowed the identification of seven other cases, completing the total number of complaints. The Conseller of Tourism, Artal Mayans, has valued very positively the management of the first inspector of Tourism in the history of the Consell and has highlighted the importance of this action to deter future infractions. “Our goal is to maintain this pace of work in 2025 to root out illegal practices in the tourist rental sector,” he said. However, these may become a “dead letter” in the face of the impossibility of moving forward with sanctions.
No Governing Board, no sanctions
Mayans himself has acknowledged in an interview on Radio Illa that“without the Governing Board can not finish putting the sanctions“. As it is an autonomic competence, the sanctions must be processed by the now defunct Governing Board of the Consell. So, for the moment, they are unable to move forward with fines ranging from 40,000 euros. While analyzing a “legal alternative” that for now has not been found, he recognizes that the only possibility for the sanctions “not to be lost” is to recover the Governing Board, something that seems almost impossible due to the development of the political crisis that led to the explosion of the coalition of sa Unió.
No inspector
According to La Voz de Ibiza, Formentera has only had a tourism inspector for three months, that is, from August to October. In this regard, from the Consell have confirmed that “it was considered that until October was the right time to perform their work” because “it makes no sense to pay 5 months of winter without anyone”.
