Unidas Podemos-Izquierda Unida has requested this Thursday that Ibiza to be included in the prohibition to build in flood zones, in view of the possible agreement in the Parliament of the Balearic Islands to reestablish this restriction. The initiative comes after the decision of the Popular Party to revoke the exemption approved in the Decree of Administrative Simplification in May 2023. The councilor of the coalition in the Consell insular, Òscar Rodríguez Aller, has stressed the importance of this ban for the island: “Now that, due to the tragedy of Valencia, the PP has decided to back down on its idea of allowing construction in flood zones again, it is necessary that this ban is also in force on the island. The Government cannot continue to consider our island an exception in territorial protection. Climate change puts us in danger and it does the same in Mallorca as in Ibiza”.
A pact for climate emergency
Rodríguez Aller has called on the different institutional levels in Ibiza to support the initiative, advocating for a “great pact” to face the climate crisis from a perspective of prevention and security. “We reach out to the Consell Insular and town councils, not only to stop building in risk areas, but also to plan how to relocate those who already live in risk areas,” he concluded. The coalition has warned that, in case Ibiza is not included in the agreement, they will present a proposal in the Consell de Ibiza to ensure that the Insular Territorial Plan prohibits construction in areas prone to flooding, thus protecting the population and the territory of the island against the consequences of climate change.
