The president of the Consell de FormenteraLlorenç Cordoba, has strongly condemned the alleged sexual assault suffered by a minor aboard a boat intercepted last Saturday night in the area of Can Marroig. Cordoba has condemned the facts and called for an exemplary sentence against the perpetrator and any accomplices.
An aggression in the middle of the crossing
The case came to light after the young woman, the only minor among the 17 occupants of the boat, reported the facts to the Civil Guard of Formentera. According to her statement, the skipper of the skiff would have committed the abuse during the journey from Algeria. The minor also reported that none of the other passengers intervened to stop the aggression. The boat was intercepted at 22:45 hours on Saturday in a joint operation of the Guardia Civil and the Local Police of Formentera. After disembarking, the minor was attended to by the island’s Social Services, who activated the support and protection protocol.
Cordoba’s condemnation
In a statement, Cordoba expressed its outrage over the event: “If it’s already heartbreaking to have to risk your life to leave your country, it’s even harder that those you trust to make the journey believe they have the right to abuse your body”. The president also pointed out that the passengers who did not act to prevent the crime share moral and legal responsibility: “The president said that the passengers who did not act to prevent the crime share moral and legal responsibility. The person who commits the crime is just as guilty as the person who witnesses it and does nothing to prevent it.. We expect the full weight of the law to fall on all of them.”
Arrest in Ibiza
The skipper of the skiff was arrested and transferred to Ibiza, where he faces charges for irregular immigration and for the alleged sexual assault. Meanwhile, the Civil Guard continues to investigate the facts and the possible complicity or inaction of the other occupants of the boat.
