The Public Prosecutor’s Office has requested a five-year prison sentence for a 54-year-old cab driver accused of running over a man with his vehicle in Formentera. The preliminary hearing of the case will be held this Monday at 12:20 pm in the First Section of the Provincial Court. The incident took place on July 21, 2021, around 06:30 hours, when the accused had just dropped off some passengers and was about to resume driving. According to the Public Prosecutor’s brief, a man stood in front of the cab with the intention that the driver would take him and his friends to their destination. Instead of stopping, the cab driver started driving with the victim still in front of the vehicle. According to the Prosecutor’s account, the man remained prostrate on the hood of the cab while it advanced a few meters before stopping, at which point the victim fell to the ground.
Consequences for the victim
The fall caused the man a cranioencephalic traumatism, a facial contusion and the loss of four incisors, in addition to other significant injuries. The Public Prosecutor’s Office considers that the facts constitute a crime of injury, for which it has requested a sentence of five years in prison for the cab driver, in addition to a compensation of 42,000 euros for the victim for damages.
Next judicial step
The preliminary hearing scheduled for this Monday will be key in determining the course of the judicial process, in which the parties will present their arguments before moving towards a possible trial. This case, which has generated concern in the Formentera community, highlights the importance of assessing circumstances and responsibilities in incidents of this gravity.
