The DANA affecting Ibiza since early morning has left a panorama of flooded streets, traffic cuts and landslides in various parts of the island. This Tuesday, the Sant Rafel tunnel, one of the key accesses to Ibiza, was temporarily closed for an hour in the direction of the city due to the accumulation of water. In addition, in areas such as Santa EulĆ ria and Sant Carles, the rains caused landslides of stones and earth that complicated traffic on several secondary roads. Mariano Juan, vice-president of the Consell de Ibiza, has declared that the technical teams are on alert, although the incidents so far have not been serious.
Flooding in Vila and critical areas
In the center of Ibiza and Sant Jordi, several points were flooded by the storm. Dissuasive parking lots and transit areas registered water levels that complicated the circulation of vehicles, while some drivers reported that the water reached the doors of their cars in the parking lots near the first ring road. At Ibiza airport, heavy rains caused leaks, although without affecting operations. Videos and testimonies on social networks showed the difficulties experienced on the island.
Municipalities suspend activities and close public spaces
Given the risk of unnecessary displacements, the town councils of Santa EulĆ ria, Sant Josep and Vila have cancelled their municipal activities, seeking to minimize the risk to the population. Santa EulĆ ria, in line with the General Directorate of Emergencies, recommended sports clubs and parents’ associations to suspend after-school activities, in addition to closing the Municipal School of Music and other youth and cultural centers. The Consistory of Vila also closed sports and cultural facilities, and the Sala Sant Jaume 72, the Teatro EspaƱa and municipal auditoriums, as well as other points of interest, remained without activity to avoid any risk.
Emergencies and recommendations: maximum caution until Wednesday
The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has activated the orange alert in Ibiza, warning of possible rainfall of up to 40 liters per square meter in just one hour, and accumulations of up to 100 liters in 12 hours. In addition, winds of 60 km/h are expected on the north coast, with waves of up to three meters. According to the AEMET, the DANA is expected to lose strength from Wednesday, although the authorities ask to maintain caution until the storm subsides. Conditions, although still unstable, could improve by Thursday. Meanwhile, local authorities and the General Directorate of Emergencies will continue to monitor the situation throughout the island to prevent major risks.
