While the Ca na Putxa landfill is running out of useful life, the Consell de Ibiza is analyzingthe only two options for the treatment of garbage: building its own incinerator or transferring it to Palma. Therefore, in recent weeks, the Balearic Government and the Consell de Mallorca have opened a consultation with the company Tirme, concessionaire and manager of solid urban waste on the island, to analyze the feasibility of taking all the waste generated in Ibiza to the Son Reus plant.
According to the newspaper Última Hora, the concessionary company considers that the infrastructure of Palma would have sufficient capacity to manage these remains and that the state waste law provides financial aid for inter-island transport. However, the Consell de Mallorca has confirmed this technical consultation, although for the moment they rule out taking charge of the waste from Ibiza. In any case, it would have to be previously treated, in addition to being packed before its transfer to be incinerated in Palma, according to Última Hora.
The position of the Consell de Ibiza
The Consell de Ibiza confirmed to La Voz de Ibiza that they are “studying a series of alternatives included in a study-report that was carried out at a technical level. They are evaluating the alternatives included in the report, in which this option is included, but there is nothing concrete”. At the time, from the consistory had highlighted the “breadth of the study that was commissioned in 2019, whose data were subsequently updated by an alternative study commissioned by the neighbors of the landfill. In any case, they are currently working on a methodology that allows, thanks to the data already available to the Consell de Ibiza and other administrations such as the Balearic Government and municipalities, to update and complete these studies to extract the most useful and updated information possible. This methodology will be exposed and subjected to a period of public participation, always ensuring transparency and strict compliance with the law”. Precisely, from the Consell have reported in recent days that theprocess of citizen participation “is in the technical evaluation phase and are the assessments that are working to present at the beginning of the year”. In addition, they detailed that the technicians value about 6 and a half years the useful life of the Ca na Putxa landfill.
Taking into account the processing times and the studies required to develop a project of such magnitude as the construction of an incinerator – at the time Ca na Putxa was proposed as the most suitable place for this – the years ahead of the landfill’s operation make the problem a battle against time.
