The Balearic Islands lead the ranking of male violence in male violence in Spainwith a rate of 124.8 cases per 10,000 women, according to a report by the trade union group UGT (Unión General de Trabajadoras y Trabajadores) presented in the framework of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which is commemorated on November 25. This figure far exceeds the national average and translates into an average of 20 battered women a day, which were extracted from the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) and the Ministry of Equality. According to the document, 7,851 women were declared victims of male violence in the Balearic Islands in 2023. The manager of UGT in the Balearic Islands, Xisca Garí, explained that the fact that the archipelago registers “year after year” the highest rates of male violence is due to a set of factors among which are a “possible” greater predisposition of the victims to make the corresponding complaints. Also, he added, influences the condition of “tourist destination with a large floating population” and the “increase of intoxications by alcohol and other drugs” during the high season. Behind the Balearic Islands are communities such as Murcia (114.5), the Valencian Community (106.5) or the Canary Islands (102.1).
530 victims of male violence per day in Spain
According to the report, there were 199,282 reports of gender-based violence in 2023, up 9.46% from 182,065 reports in 2022, and 193,521 women victims of gender-based violence, equivalent to 530 women victims of gender-based violence every day. The average rate of women victims of gender-based violence from partners or ex-partners in 2023 per 10,000 women was 79.4; six and a half points higher than in 2022.
Balearic Islands is the region with the highest prostitution rate
The UGT study also includes the data published last September by Equality and that place the Islands as the region with the highest rate of prostitution, 121 per 10,000 women, while the national average rate is 56. “Prostitution is also a form of gender violence and in our islands there is prostitution tourism,” said the spokeswoman for the trade union organization.
