The Consell Insular de Formentera has begun to remove the pateras abandoned on the coast of the island after the refusal of the central government to take charge of the boats that are in the water: it will only destroy those boats that are in the landfill. This has meant that the insular institution has urgently contracted a company to take charge of this waste, before it becomes a danger to the environment.
As reported this morning from the Consell, a minor contract has been made by which the company Eivisub was committed to the removal of 15 boats. For the moment, 11 boats have already been taken out of the water and transferred to the landfill, another one has been towed that was in Es Arenals and three more that were located in the Levante area are expected to be removed today. Given the high cost of removing this waste caused by illegal immigration and the refusal of the central government to comply with its obligation to remove them, the Consell Insular de Formentera is considering the possibility of issuing a tender to keep the coast free of pateras in 2025.
According to them, “there is no forecast that this avalanche of boats is going to diminish, but on the contrary, since the Mediterranean Route is already a fully consolidated entry route to Europe”.
