The Christmas season has once again set off the alarm bells in Ibiza and Formentera, with a notable increase in complaints from dissatisfied consumers. From the General Directorate of Consumer Affairs of the Govern it was reported that, until this time last year, more than 7,500 complaints had already been registered in the Balearic Islands, of which 898 came from Ibiza and 35 from Formentera. This year, expectations point to an increase, especially since the Black Friday campaign and at the height of pre-Christmas shopping. According to Dulce GarcĆa, head of the Consumer Training Service, the most targeted sectors are air transport and telecommunications. Airlines, in particular, lead the list of complaints, with users reporting delays, cancellations and baggage problems. This panorama reflects a trend that, as anticipated by the authorities, could intensify after the holidays.
The impact of the increase in the cost of claims
Alfonso RodrĆguez, spokesman for Consubal (Association of Consumers of the Balearic Islands), stressed on Radio Ibiza SER that Christmas this year will be 10% more expensive for residents of the archipelago, with the food sector leading the price increases. This increase has generated a climate of widespread dissatisfaction, especially in food and gift purchases. In addition, Rodriguez warns about the danger of indebtedness in these dates, motivated by quick credits that, although tempting, can derive in high interests and complicate the domestic economy in the long term.
Tips for responsible consumption
Given this scenario, consumer experts recommend anticipating purchases and planning them carefully. Drawing up a list of specific needs and avoiding impulse purchases are key to avoiding the dreaded “January slope”.
They also call on consumers to demand their rights in the event of defective products or unfulfilled services and to use official channels to file complaints.
