Ibiza demonstrates its commitment to sustainability by recycling 10.36 million kilograms of glass during the last year, according to data provided by Ecovidrio.according to data provided by Ecovidrio. This is equivalent to an average of 65 kilos recycled per inhabitant, a figure that highlights the environmental awareness of the island’s population.
Ibiza has a containerization rate of 145 inhabitants per container, thanks to the installation of 1,095 igloos dedicated to the collection of glass containers. This infrastructure facilitates access to recycling for all citizens, thus contributing to the high collection rate recorded. During the month of November, the campaign “Recycling glass: a small gesture, a big impact” mobilized the community to raise awareness of the importance of recycling to protect ecosystems. Through environmental awareness actions in all the municipalities of Ibiza, a total of 418,240 kilograms of glass containers were recovered. The initiative included a recycling challenge that proposed a 1% increase in collection. However, the results far exceeded expectations, reaching an increase of 10%. This achievement made it possible to increase the donation to the Cap Blanc Aquarium, located in Sant Antoni de Portmany, reinforcing the island’s environmental commitment.
Benefits of glass recycling
According to Ecovidrio, the glass deposited in the containers is 100% recycled, being used to manufacture new containers indefinitely and without losing its original properties. This process is considered a key element in the fight against climate change, as it contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions and energy savings. Ibiza, with its outstanding recycling rate and its active participation in environmental awareness initiatives, is positioned as an example of collective commitment to environmental protection and climate change mitigation.
