The Balearic Islands has, on average, almost double the number of cases of gender violence than the rest of Spain, with 35.5 victims per 10,000 inhabitants, when the national average stands at 19.6, according to the Report on Violence against Women of the Observatory against Domestic and Gender Violence corresponding to the third quarter of 2024.
Between July and September 2024, the number of women victims of gender violence in the Balearic Islands fell by 1.4% compared to the same period of the previous year, with a total of 2,197 victims registered. Of these, 1,235 were Spanish nationals and 962 were foreigners, including nine minors under guardianship. Complaints also fell by a slight 0.1%, with a total of 2,289 cases reported.
Of the total number of complaints, the majority were derived from police reports filed by the victim (1,254), followed by 456 cases of direct intervention by police officers, and 80 from complaints filed by family members. Only 77 women went directly to court to file a complaint, while family members filed 18 complaints.
In the same period, the number of protection orders adopted also decreased significantly, with a 12% reduction compared to the previous year, to 352.
Judgments and legal proceedings
During the third quarter, a total of 310 people were prosecuted in cases related to gender violence in the Balearic Islands, 7.7% less than in 2023. Of these, 301 people (165 Spaniards and 136 foreigners) were convicted, while nine were acquitted. Most of the proceedings took place in the criminal courts, where 245 people were tried. Of the 195 convictions handed down in these courts, 155 were resolved by prior agreement between the parties. In addition, the duty courts of the Balearic Islands handled 661 cases related to gender violence in this quarter.
National comparison
At the national level, there was also a decrease in the number of victims (-6.57%) and complaints (-0.62%) compared to the third quarter of 2023. In total, there were 53,147 complaints and 48,725 victims throughout Spain.
