In the heart of the Morna Valley, north of Ibiza, a century-old stable has been transformed into a refuge that combines tradition and contemporaneity. In charge of this rebirth is the Ibiza Interiors studio, led by architect Jurjen Van Hulzen, who has given new life to a construction more than 200 years old without losing an iota of its original essence. According to an article published in Elle Decor, this space, christened Atelier, sums up the studio’s philosophy: a perfect balance between the rustic and the modern, the antique and the functional. What was once a simple barn, forgotten among stones and undergrowth, is now a multifunctional refuge that can be used as temporary housing, work space or simply a place to disconnect.
Balance between old and new
The renovation respected the original elements that define the traditional architecture of Ibiza. Dry stone walls and wooden beams coexist with two large openings in the main faƧade that bring a contemporary feel and allow natural light to flood the interior. “The emphasis is on the interplay between the old and the contemporary, the elegant and the rustic,” explains Jurjen Van Hulzen, founder of the studio. Inside, the flexibility of the space is key:
- A modern kitchen is the only fixed element, while the large central table can be used as a dining room or desk.
- In the bedroom, a built-in closet allows for extended stays, and in the bathroom, a gray bathtub receives natural light through a skylight.
- Rainy afternoons also have their charm: linen curtains darken the room to turn it into a home cinema, where poufs, plaids and a projector transform the environment into an intimate corner.
An exterior that honors the Ibicencan landscape
The Atelier environment, designed by Ibiza Exteriors, the studio’s specialized garden division, pays homage to the island’s wild landscape. Mediterranean plant species, selected for their adaptation to the local climate and low maintenance, are integrated with the natural surroundings, respecting the essence of the Morna valley. “The Atelier is a jewel in the rough, a small space that encapsulates freedom, tranquility and authenticity,” concludes Jurjen Van Hulzen. The remodeling of this former stable not only brings a forgotten building back to life, but also offers a multifunctional refuge where the modern and the traditional meet, inviting you to disconnect from the world without losing touch with Ibiza’s history and nature.
