At the age of 88, Andrés Tuells Juan, a prominent lawyer and politician of the island, passed away this Saturday. Belonging to a family with a long tradition in the legal profession, his grandfather, Andrés Tuells y Pujol, founded the family firm in 1893, followed by his father, Guillermo Tuells Riquer.
After graduating in law from the University of Barcelona in 1961, Andrés continued the family legacy in the firm, which offers services in areas such as traffic accidents, contracts, family law, inheritance, incorporation of companies, private international law and real estate advice. In addition to his legal career, Tuells Juan had an active participation in the political and social life of Ibiza. He was the first president of the Unión de Centro Democrático (UCD) on the island during the Spanish Transition and, subsequently, he was a militant in the Centro Democrático y Social (CDS), with which he was elected deputy to the Balearic Parliament in 1987. He also held positions as vice-president of Ibiza FC, delegate of the Ibiza Bar Association and vice-consul of Sweden. In 1964, together with his cousin Abel Matutes Juan, he founded the company Suministros Ibiza. His career was not without controversy; in 2014, he was sentenced to two years in prison and the payment of compensation for false accusations of prevarication and bribery against a magistrate and a female lawyer.
