Rafael Nadal, who retired from professional tennis last month, has shared an emotional letter in The Players’ Tribune entitled The Gift, in which he reveals unknown aspects of his life as an elite athlete. “Every night before a match, I would go to bed feeling like I could lose,” confessed the 22-time Grand Slam winner, showing the constant pressure he experienced during his career.
Nadal highlighted how physical difficulties marked critical moments in his career: “Physical pain was something I was used to, but there were times when I could not control my breathing, and that prevented me from performing at my best,” he said. Despite this, the Mallorcan stressed the importance of the values instilled by his family, such as respect for opponents, and reflected: “The player you see with a trophy is a person who is exhausted, relieved, grateful, but only one person”.
A docuseries with unprecedented access
Netflix has announced a docuseries about the life and career of Rafael Nadal, in collaboration with Skydance Sports. Featuring “unprecedented access,” the production will showcase never-before-seen footage, both personal and professional, and will include Nadal’s final year, marked by injuries and challenges. Directed by Oscar nominee Zach Heinzerling, the series does not yet have a title or confirmed release date. In Nadal’s own words, the docuseries will reflect his evolution: “I never thought I would do something like this, but the project convinced me. You can see what my life has been like throughout my career and especially this last year, which has not been easy”. She also thanked her family, team and colleagues for their willingness to appear in front of the cameras. Diego Ávalos, Netflix’s vice president of content for Spain, highlighted: “Rafael Nadal is one of the greatest and most influential figures in sports. We are thrilled to present his extraordinary story”.
