The autonomous community of the Balearic Islands contributes 80% of the cost of free public transport on the islands, while the State assumes the remaining 20%.
The Councilor for Mobility, José Luis Mateo, has specified this Monday that the cost of free public transport in 2024 (intercity buses, subway and train) has amounted to about 70 million euros, of which 54 have been paid by the Govern and 43 by the State. In statements to the media, the minister criticized the fact that the central government has not yet paid these 43 million corresponding to 2024 and has no official notification that it will contribute the same amount in 2025. In Mateo’s opinion, the situation is“dramatic” because the year is almost over and the Ministry of Transport has not yet sent any information to the regional government about its “collaboration” in the free public transport, which is mostly paid by the autonomous community, he insisted. In the same sense, the president of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohens, explained in a meeting with young students that the funds provided by the central government are not enough “in any way”. Prohens complained that the announcement of the extension of the free transport to 2025 has only been known through the media, so the autonomous Executive is still waiting for official information from the Government.
