Bad weather has once again affected maritime connections in the Pitiusas, this time on a day as special as Christmas Eve. The ferry Ramon Llull of the shipping company Balearia, which was scheduled to depart this Tuesday at 7:30 am from Ibiza to Formentera, has canceled its journey due to the strong wind and the adverse state of the sea.
This is the same service that yesterday also had to be suspended, along with another one operated by Cap de Barbaria. Both cancellations on Monday were due to bad weather conditions, with strong gusts of wind from the northwest that caused yellow alert in the Pitiusas for adverse coastal phenomena. Passengers affected by yesterday’s cancellation of the Ramon Llull, which was bound for Denia, had to change their plans and travel from Ibiza to Valencia, arriving eight hours later than their original itinerary.
Orange alerts in Menorca and Mallorca due to coastal phenomena
Today, Tuesday, the AEMET has activated two orange alerts for coastal phenomena in the north and northeast of Mallorca and Menorca. Waves of up to 12 meters are expected in these areas, especially in the east of Menorca, and winds from the north that could reach 80 km/h. These severe weather conditions are added to the yellow alerts in force in other areas of the archipelago, which complicate maritime operations and could generate new cancellations. Yesterday, in Menorca, the strong wind and swell caused waves of up to 11 meters, which led to the closure of the ports of Maó and Ciutadella for much of Monday. This situation has left the island incommunicado by sea, preventing the arrival of passengers and goods, including large quantities of fresh produce essential for the Christmas holidays.
