The Ibiza Town Hall has put out to tender the rehabilitation and refurbishment works of the old fish market, known as sa Peixateria, with a total budget of 2,026,358.41 euros, financed through the Capitalidad funds.
The main objective of the project is to convert this emblematic space of protected octagonal geometry into a Multipurpose Cultural Center, respecting its architectural and historical value. According to the project report, the existing facades will be restored and a wooden roof will be installed to create an open-plan interior space, ideal for multiple community uses in the neighborhoods of sa Marina and sa Penya.
Adapted and sustainable spaces
The design includes a multi-purpose cultural hall, a storage room, changing rooms and three toilets. In addition, acoustic requirements will be addressed to avoid noise pollution both inside and outside the building. Auxiliary areas, such as toilets and storage areas, will be integrated into the adjacent volumes, preserving the original geometry of the building. “A functional and purist design is sought that maintains the identity of sa Peixateria while adapting to the needs of the city’s cultural and social environment,” notes the project report.
Rehabilitation of the urban environment
The project also contemplates the improvement of the surrounding urban space, favoring the integration of the facility into the urban fabric of the area. These interventions will make it possible to prepare the open spaces for complementary activities and enhance access to the cultural center. The tender is already open for the works, which include all the necessary interventions to provide the building with modern and functional facilities, respecting as much as possible its historical character.
New project for sa Peixateria
The City Council terminated the contract of the company that was executing the project initiated under the socialist mandate and compensated it with 100,000 euros. The reason is that the PP government decided to abandon the previous project to establish food outlets. It justified the decision in the face of neighborhood opposition on the grounds that the previous government’s project was technically unfeasible. Obviously, the decision has been a source of constant criticism by the PSOE. In an interview in La Voz de Ibiza, the mayor said that “a food market did not solve the problems of the neighborhood in low season and that is why we reformulated it.” “Sa Peixateria has to be a space that forces our citizens to visit the Marina, with a large multipurpose center and a large cultural space that gives life to the neighborhood,” said Rafa Triguero.
