The Audiencia Nacional (AN) begins 2025 with a judicial agenda marked by media trials and highly relevant rulings. Among the most prominent cases are the proceedings against the former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales, and the Pujol family, as well as the trial against the Galician drug trafficker Sito Miñanco and 50 other defendants.
Rubiales’ trial, which will begin on February 3, will investigate the controversial non-consensual kissing of soccer player Jenni Hermoso after the World Cup in Sydney. The prosecution is seeking 2 years and 6 months in prison for sexual assault and coercion. Jorge Vilda, Albert Luque and Rubén Rivera will also be tried for alleged coercion related to the case. The trial of the Pujol family will start on November 10, facing charges of criminal organization, money laundering and tax fraud. The Prosecutor’s Office is asking for sentences of up to 29 years in prison for Jordi Pujol Ferrusola and 9 years for former President Jordi Pujol.
Key judgments in 2025
Among the expected resolutions, the cases Nueva Rumasa, involving the children of José María Ruiz-Mateos, and Nummaria, in which actors Imanol Arias and Ana Duato are being tried for tax fraud, stand out. The sentence of the ‘fire cartel’, related to alleged rigging of fire fighting contracts, is also expected.
Ongoing investigations
The NA will continue to make progress in cases such as the alleged fraud of Madeira Invest Club, linked to MEP Luis ‘Alvise’ Pérez, or the money laundering scheme in which the head of Economic Crimes of the National Police hid 20 million euros in his house. 2025 promises to be a key judicial year, with important political and social repercussions.
