MasOrange and Vodafone Spain have reached a binding agreement to create FibreCo, the largest fiber company in Europe, with more than 12 million connected real estate units. This project seeks to boost connectivity and digitalization in Spain, providing the country with an innovative, sustainable and market-leading fiber optic network.
FibreCo’s network will be dedicated exclusively to MasOrange and Vodafone customers, enabling operational efficiencies and continuous service quality improvement. Under the agreement, MasOrange will hold a 50% stake, Vodafone a 10% stake, and a financial investor – whose identity has not yet been disclosed – will own the remaining 40%.
Debt reduction and customer benefits
The revenues generated by this transaction will be used by MasOrange to reduce its debt, while Vodafone will use its revenues to reduce its leverage and provide returns to shareholders. In addition, customers will benefit from an infrastructure that will facilitate the adoption of advanced technologies such as Xgspon and foster innovation.
A European benchmark
FibreCo, which will be fully operational by the end of the first half of 2025, reinforces Spain’s position as one of the countries with the most advanced telecommunications networks in Europe, aligning with the EU’s digital agenda. The CEO of MasOrange, Meinrad Spenger, stressed that the new company will be a European benchmark in terms of size, innovation and sustainability. For his part, the chief executive of Vodafone Spain, José Miguel García, said that this agreement is a milestone in its strategy to make Vodafone a more competitive and growing company.
