The tranquility of Illetes beach, in Formentera, was interrupted this Tuesday, January 7, when two tourists discovered the lifeless bodies of two men floating in the water. The discovery triggered an operation in which the Local Police and the Judicial Police of the Civil Guard began an investigation to clarify the causes of death. According to the first observations, the corpses correspond to males between 30 and 40 years old. They show no visible signs of violence, but the authorities are awaiting the results of the autopsies to determine precisely the causes of death.
Connection with recent shipwrecks
Although there is still no official confirmation, the possibility that the bodies belong to migrants who attempted to cross the Mediterranean is on the table. This incident comes less than a month after a skiff wrecked near Formentera, leaving two confirmed dead and several people missing, according to survivors’ accounts. The Consell de Formentera reported that the bodies found in Illetes had been in the water for less than a week, which could be consistent with the conditions of a recent shipwreck. However, authorities do not rule out other hypotheses until they have conclusive information.
Expectations for autopsies
The results of the autopsies will be key to advancing the investigation. These will not only determine the exact cause of the deaths, but may also shed light on the identity of the deceased and their possible connection to migratory events in the area.
