The Union of Nursing Technicians (SAE) has put in the spotlight the management of medical transport in Ibiza, denouncing a situation they describe as “serious neglect and lack of maintenance” in the ambulances. ambulances by GSAIB (Gestión Sanitaria y Asistencial de las Islas Baleares), a public company under the Balearic Government. The alarm has intensified after a recent incident that left two people injured inside an ambulance.
An incident that highlights the shortcomings
The trigger for this complaint occurred when a patient in serious condition fell from a stretcher due to a broken bar, causing injuries both to the patient himself and to an Emergency Health Technician who was trying to prevent the fall. According to the union, this fact is a clear example of the lack of maintenance of medical transport equipment.
“This incident is a direct consequence of the neglect in the maintenance of ambulances,” says the SAE in its statement, noting that the technician suffered injuries when he was trapped between the bars of the stretcher. The union warns that this situation not only jeopardizes the safety of professionals, but also that of service users.
Ibiza, without specific bases or logistics
Among the criticisms launched by the SAE, is the absence of specific bases for ambulances in Ibiza, forcing vehicles remain parked outdoors, exposing them to conditions that affect their conservation. In addition, they stress that the island lacks a logistics vehicle, a resource that, according to the union, is available on other islands of the archipelago such as Mallorca and Menorca. “The lack of a logistics vehicle is a crucial problem. This type of resource would allow ambulances to focus exclusively on patient care, leaving other operational tasks in the hands of the logistics team,” the statement explains.
Structural and labor problems
The complaint also points to problems that directly affect workers, such as the lack of available uniforms due to delays in sending them to be washed in Palma de Mallorca, which leads technicians to use clothes borrowed from colleagues. In addition, the union assures that GSAIB accumulates numerous complaints before the Labor Inspectorate and the courts, becoming, according to them, “the most denounced public company in the Balearic Islands”.
They demand urgent measures
The SAE has requested immediate measures from the administrations to prevent the situation from worsening, especially with the arrival of the high summer season. “If urgent decisions are not taken, we could face a collapse in healthcare transport during the most critical months of the year,” they warn.
The SAE concludes its complaint by calling on the Government to guarantee an adequate health transport service that respects both the safety of patients and the working conditions of professionals.
