The former president of the Consell de Formentera, Llorenç Cordoba, has launched harsh criticism against the current team of the Consell insular for not demanding the dismantling of the beach kiosks during the regulatory period, from January 15 to February 15, as stipulated in the contracts. Cordoba calls this situation “scandalous” and accuses the administration of prioritizing private interests over compliance with the law and the general interest.
Public denouncement of the councilor
In a statement, Cordoba said that the order of the Councilor for the Environment, Veronica Castelló, to simply ask for the temporary closure of the kiosks, instead of requiring their dismantling, is a flagrant breach of the specifications, the technical and legal reports of the Consell, as well as the regulations of the Balearic Government. According to Cordoba, this decision “shifts the responsibility to the Consell, when it is an obligation of the concessionaires”.
The non-attached councilor stresses that this fact reflects “a lack of transparency and interest in complying with the laws that regulate this activity”, something that, in his opinion, exposes the Consell to possible financial penalties that, ultimately, would fall on the citizens.
Legal and economic implications
The current regulations establish that the concessionaires of the beach kiosks must dismantle the facilities during this winter period to ensure the maintenance and recovery of the coastal areas. Córdoba argues that, by not complying with this requirement, the applicable legislation is violated and the institutional image of the Consell is damaged. In addition, he warned that the administration could face economic sanctions by competent bodies, a burden that would fall on the public coffers. “It is unacceptable that political decisions benefit a few to the detriment of the collective interest,” he added.
Criticism of the new island government
Cordoba also questioned the general management of the new government team, formed by a coalition of PP, Gent per Formentera, Compromís and PSOE, which he accuses of prioritizing “particular interests” and showing “an absolute disregard for the regulations”. According to the conseller, this situation is just one example of a series of irregularities since they took office. “These 16 councilors who promoted a motion of censure and who now manage the Consell have shown that legality is not among their priorities,” he said. The former president demanded an immediate rectification by the government team, urging them to enforce contracts and ensure transparent management of public resources. He also called on citizens to remain vigilant and not allow these irregularities to go unpunished. “Formentera deserves a Consell that works for the general interest and acts with honesty,” concluded Córdoba.
