The PSOE of Ibiza has denounced the “passivity” of the president of the Consell Insular, Vicent Maríin the face of the increase of substandard housing camps on the island. According to the socialist spokeswoman, Elena López Bonet, “the housing drama in Ibiza is skyrocketing because of a Popular Party that refuses to act and take action”.
The socialist group assures that, although Vicent Marí announced in July 2024 the creation of a “specific table” to address this problem, “the municipalities continue to act on their own, without the coordination promised by the Consell Insular”. Lopez said that this lack of coordination is moving the problem “from one place to another” without attacking the root causes. “If last summer was already terrible, with a dozen camps in places like Can Rova, Can Raspalls, Sa Joveria or Es Gorg, we are on our way to an even worse summer, given the total lack of action by the Consell Insular,” said Lopez. He also criticized Vicent Marí for describing the situation as “unacceptable” without presenting “real and effective solutions”.
PSOE calls for “policies that attack the roots of the problem”.
The PSOE insists that the Consell Insular must lead a joint and comprehensive response that is not limited to “coercive and punctual measures”, but that contemplates policies such as the regulation of rental prices, the construction of public housing and social support for those affected. “This lack of coordination between institutions only shifts the problem of settlements from one municipality to another, without offering a long-term solution,” said Lopez. According to the PSOE, this crisis requires “policies that attack the roots of the problem,” such as the lack of affordable housing and the growing social vulnerability on the island. The socialist formation concluded by demanding the Consell Insular a plan that guarantees “access to decent housing” and that addresses the problem with a “serious and responsible” approach.
