The coastline of Cala de Bou, in the bay of PortmanyThe coastline of Cala de Bou, in the bay of Portmany, is once again facing an episode of pollution that worries both neighbors and environmental associations. As denounced this morning by the platform Salvem sa Badia de Portmany, sewage discharges have reappeared in several points of the coast due to the deteriorated state of the sewage network, which accumulates constant breakdowns without receiving a definitive solution.
Repeated and unresolved episodes
A neighbor riding his bicycle in the southern part of the bay has documented images of the spill and reported two main sources: one between the shores of es Pinet and CalĆ³ d’en Serral, and another near the Hotel Amare. The photographs show pools of sewage accumulating on the surface and a foul odor spreading throughout the area. According to residents’ statements, the problem is not a recent one, as the breakdowns have persisted for more than a month. Some neighbors claim that this situation had already been reported last September, when Salvem sa Badia alerted of a similar spill in the same stretch. However, the pipe network remains in the same state, with visible holes that leave the sewage systems exposed.
Environmental and tourism consequences
The affected infrastructure runs along the coast, transporting wastewater from hotels and homes to the ses PaĆÆsses treatment plant. Due to the advanced deterioration of the pipes, they are frequently obstructed, which generates overflows in the sewers and direct discharges into the marine environment. This problem already caused last summer the temporary closure of several beaches in the bay, damaging both the environment and the tourist image of the area. The platform Salvem sa Badia insists that this situation represents a serious risk to both the natural environment and public health, especially considering the proximity of the discharges to beaches that remain open to the public.
Urgent solution
Neighbors have expressed their frustration at the apparent inaction of the authorities. “We have been seeing these episodes repeated for months and nothing is being done to definitively repair the pipes,” expressed a resident of Cala de Bou. For its part, Salvem sa Badia has urged the municipal and regional authorities to prioritize a structural and definitive solution, as they consider that punctual repairs are not enough to avoid future crises.
