Seven cyclists of the German track cycling team were injured on Monday after being hit by a car driven by an 89-year-old man at kilometer 9.300 of the Ma-19A road, in the municipality of Palma and in the direction of Llucmajor. The accident occurred around 10:30 am, as reported by the Guardia Civil. The driver was traveling in the same direction as the cyclists when, for reasons under investigation, he hit them. SAMU 061 medical personnel attended the athletes at the scene of the incident. While one of them was discharged on the spot, the other six were taken to hospital: four to the ClĆnica Rotger and two to the ClĆnica Palmaplanas. All have polycontusions and are in a less serious condition, according to IbSalut. The injured, aged between 19 and 27, were training in Mallorca as part of the preparation of the German track cycling team. The German federation confirmed in a statement that although none suffered serious injuries, some have fractures that will keep them away from competition for some time. The driver of the car tested negative for alcohol at the scene. The Guardia Civil’s Traffic Department has taken over the investigation to determine the exact causes of the accident.
