The Vuelta a Ibiza MTB SIROKO by Shimano will count in its next edition with the participation of José Antonio Hermida, XCO world champion in 2010 and Olympic medalist in Athens 2004, who will compete in the individual category, as confirmed by the organization.
Back to Ibiza with a new challenge
“I am delighted to be able to return to the Vuelta a Ibiza MTB SIROKO by Shimano, in addition to the original one, the one at Easter. The last time I was there, in 2021, was in October. I was able to enjoy everything that surrounds Ibiza with ‘Purito’, the ‘Zipi’ and ‘Zape’ of MTB, but it didn’t have the same essence as always. The stages are hard, although ‘disfrutonas’, and to be able to complete it with the gastronomy and the beaches of Ibiza is something unique,” Hermida said. This year, the Catalan cyclist will compete solo, just like Joaquim ‘Purito’ Rodríguez. “This time I’m doing it individually. In 2021, ‘Purito’ squeezed my nails as a partner, this year I plan to do it myself. This edition is going to be a ‘Friends of Purito vs Friends of Hermida’ challenge, it’s going to be a lot of fun and we hope to have everyone,” he added in a relaxed tone.
An enviable track record
Hermida, considered a legend of mountain biking, was XCO world champion in 2010 and won the silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, one of the greatest successes for Spanish MTB. In addition, he has four European titles (1999, 2000, 2004 and 2007) and six Spanish XCO championships, which consolidated him as the best of his generation. His career is also marked by multiple podiums in the World Cup, demonstrating his dominance in the elite of mountain biking for decades.
A luxury for the Tour of Ibiza
For Juanjo Planells, organizer of the race, the presence of Hermida is a privilege: “For me he is the best of all time in the mountains, that he repeats in the Vuelta a Ibiza MTB SIROKO by Shimano can only bring us good things,” he concluded.
