Unemployment registered in the offices of the public employment services fell by 1,567 people in January compared to last year (-5.03%) to 29,560 unemployed after a decrease of 2.09% compared to December, according to data published Tuesday by the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy.
The highest numbers of unemployed in the Balearic Islands are in Services (22,110), followed by Construction (3,518), Industry (1,258) and Agriculture (349).
With January’s drop, the unemployment rate in the region has now fallen for two consecutive months.
Thus, the Balearic Islands ended the first month of the year as the only autonomous community, together with Ceuta, in which unemployment has fallen.
As for unemployment, the data released Tuesday by the Ministry of Labor show increases of more than 3% in Asturias (4.11%), Extremadura (3.99%) and Aragon (3.80%) and 2% in Cantabria (2.76%), Castilla y Leon (2.69%), Galicia (2.09%) and Castilla-La Mancha (2.03%).
Unemployment also grew above the average (1.51%) in Andalusia (1.87%) and the Basque Country (1.84%), while it rose below the national average in Murcia (1.42%), La Rioja (1.29%), Madrid (1.25%), Navarra (1.06%), the Valencian Community (0.98%), Catalonia (0.43%) and the Canary Islands (0.11%).
Compared with January 2024, only Navarre now records a worse figure, albeit only 0.04 %, while Andalusia (-9.55 %) continues to lead the way in unemployment reduction, ahead of Extremadura (-8.82 %), the Canary Islands (-7.83 %), Galicia (-7.46 %), La Rioja (-7.37 %) and Cantabria (-7.24 %).

In the Balearic Islands, the total number of unemployed is the lowest figure for a month of January since records have been kept. Since the beginning of the comparable historical series, in 1996, unemployment has fallen in January the most times in the Balearics (21 times) while it has risen on 7 occasions, with last month’s decline being the largest drop since 2022.
By sector, unemployment fell in Services, 560 less (-2.47%); Construction, 88 less (-2.44%); Agriculture, 20 less (-5.42%); Industry, 19 less (-1.49%).
In terms of gender, of the 29,560 unemployed registered in January, 16,765 were women, 218 less (-1.3%) and 12,795 were men, representing a decrease of 414 in the number of unemployed compared to the previous month (-3.1%).
In January, unemployment among young people under 25 years of age fell, with 203 fewer unemployed than at the end of last month (-5.2%), while unemployment among people aged 25 and over fell by 429 (-1.63%).
Social Security
With respect to employment, according to data provided Tuesday by the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, it fell especially in January, in addition to Extremadura, in Cantabria (1.48%), the Valencian Community (1.47%), the Balearic Islands (1.46%) and Castilla-La Mancha (1.40%).
More than the average (1.13%), the number of members fell in Asturias (1.31%), Andalusia (1.24%), Castile and Leon (1.21%), Galicia (1.16%) and Murcia (1.15%).
Below the country as a whole, employment fell in Navarre (1.01%), Catalonia (0.99%), the Basque Country (0.98%), Aragon (0.94%), La Rioja (0.92%), Madrid (0.91%) and the Canary Islands (0.88%).
In the last 12 months, all territories have maintained positive figures, with the Canary Islands (3.35%) and the Balearic Islands (3.18%) leading the way, ahead of Madrid (2.99%), Andalusia (2.84%) and Murcia (2.66%).
