With the Christmas season in full swing, many residents and visitors to Mallorca are wondering when they will be able to do last-minute shopping for Christmas dinner, buy gifts or stock up the pantry before December 31. Some holidays, such as December 25 and 26, coincide this year with mandatory closures in the Balearics, making it even more important to plan shopping and know the special opening hours of supermarkets and stores.
Below, we review how the main establishments on the island will open and close during these special days, including Sundays when shops are open for business, the eve of holidays and public holidays.
Alcampo: opening on Sundays and reduced opening hours on Christmas Eve
In Mallorca, Alcampo has only one supermarket in Marratxí. On the Sundays of commercial opening in December, the chain has informed that customers will be able to go from 9:00 to 22:00 hours.
As for Christmas Eve, on December 24, the supermarket will open with reduced opening hours from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, allowing last-minute shoppers to complete their Christmas menus. However, on December 25 and 26 it will remain closed, in accordance with the Balearic holiday calendar.
Aldi: stores open late and exceptions on December 26th
All Aldi chain stores in Mallorca will be open on December 24 until 19:00 hours. On December 25, Christmas Day, they will remain closed.
On December 26, which is also a holiday in the Balearic Islands, some branches will be open from 9:00 am to 9:30 pm. These include stores in Magaluf, Palmanova, Campos, Can Picafort and Felanitx, facilitating shopping after Christmas Eve.
SUMA and BIP: open even on holidays with extended opening hours
The Transgourmet Ibérica group, responsible for SUMA supermarkets, which recently acquired Grupo Moyà Saus (manager of the BIP supermarket network), stands out for keeping stores open even on days that are usually more complicated for the trade.
The store located at Carrer d’en Rubí, 12, in the center of Palma, is open every Sunday, including Sundays when the store is open for business and also during Christmas holidays. Its opening hours are continuous from 8:00 to 0:00 hours, which provides an extended option for shopping outside the usual opening hours.
Carrefour: superstores and special opening hours
The French chain Carrefour has hypermarkets in Mallorca located in shopping centers such as FAN and Porto Pi, as well as smaller stores under the Carrefour Express brand.
The four large establishments in Palma and the one in Sa Coma will close on Christmas Eve at 19:00 hours. As for the holidays of December 25 and 26, all will remain closed except Sa Coma, which will be open from 9:00 to 22:00 hours.
During the two Sundays of commercial opening in December, all Carrefour hypermarkets will be open, also from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm, facilitating last minute shopping.
El Corte Inglés and Opencor/Supercor: extended hours and exceptions
At El Corte Inglés de las Avenidas de Palma and Jaume III, both the supermarket and the general store will have reduced opening hours on December 24 from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm. On December 25 they will be closed for public holidays.
On December 26, the Jaume III store will be open from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. On Sundays when the store is open for business, both branches will be open from 9:00 am to 9:30 pm.
For their part, the Opencor establishments, belonging to the same group, have longer opening hours. The Opencor at Calle Ramón y Cajal, 17, in Palma, is open every day, even on December 25, from 8:00 to 2:00 hours. Only on Christmas Eve does it reduce its opening hours, opening from 8:00 to 20:00 hours.
Similarly, the Supercor near the Son Moix stadium maintains the same opening hours as El Corte Inglés in the Avenidas, even during the holidays, facilitating late purchases and perishable products.
In addition, throughout the island there are small Mini-Supercor integrated into gas stations, whose opening hours depend on the service station’s opening hours.
Mercadona: closed on commercial holidays and Sundays
The stores of Mercadona, one of the best known chains in Spain, will be open on December 24 from 9:00 to 19:00 hours. However, on December 25 and 26 they will remain closed, in accordance with Balearic holiday regulations.
In addition, Mercadona will not be open on the Sundays of December 21 and 28, so consumers will have to plan their shopping or look for alternatives in other establishments for those days.
Eroski: store variability and extended opening hours on Sundays
The Basque chain Eroski also adjusts opening hours depending on the store. According to its website, all stores will remain closed on December 25, including the one on Avinguda de l’Argentina, 20, in Palma, which in previous years used to open on holidays.
On Christmas Eve(24.12) this store will open with reduced opening hours from 9:00 to 18:00 hours, and on December 26 from 9:00 to 14:00 hours. On Sundays when the store is open for business (December 21 and 28), it will be open from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm.
Another store, at Carrer del Cardenal Rossell, 1, in Palma, will be open both on Christmas Eve and on commercial Sundays from 9:00 am to 9:30 pm, although it will also be closed on December 25 and 26.
Lidl: selective opening by branch
At Lidl, opening hours vary according to branch and location, although it is virtually certain that all stores will remain closed on December 25. For example, the Can Picafort branch will be open on Sundays when it is open for business and on December 26, always from 9:00 am to 9:30 pm. On December 24 it will close at 19:00 hours, and on December 25 it will be closed.
The store at Carrer d’Andalusia, 34, next to the Son Moix stadium in Palma, will only open on December 24 from 9:00 to 19:00 and will not reopen until December 27, when it will resume its normal opening hours.
Other establishments: Agromart, Müller and Rossmann.
Other chains present in Mallorca have also published Christmas opening hours. Agromart, with several stores on the island, will open on December 24 from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, will remain closed on December 25 and will open on December 26 from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. However, the Manacor and Son Rossinyol branches will remain closed throughout the festive period.
In the case of Müller, German perfumery and drugstore chain, there are no general details published, but according to this editorial office, the branch of Hort de les Ànimes, 14 will be open on December 21 and 28 from 9:00 to 22:00 hours and on December 24 at least until 19:00 hours, remaining closed on December 25 and 26.
Finally, Rossmann, another drugstore chain with presence in Palma, will open on Christmas Eve until 19:00 hours and will remain closed on December 25 and 26. On the Sundays of commercial opening in December, its stores will open their usual opening hours, except for some stores with shorter opening hours in towns such as Manacor and Felanitx, which will open only from 10:00 to 15:00 hours.
