The Ses Dotze Naus Foundation presents this weekend a new workshop, ‘Reimagining the Instant City: New Architectures for Contemporary Art’, as part of its program of public activities at La Carpintería. The proposal is the result of the research carried out by curator and researcher Raquel Victoria, selected in the first edition of a research residency program aimed at visual artists, curators and researchers from Mallorca, Menorca and Formentera. The workshop aims to develop experimental proposals inspired by the Instant City project , created during the VII Congress of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID), held in Cala de San Miguel from 14 to 16 October 1971.

This case represents a key turning point in the understanding of the relationship between art, architecture and experimental design , challenging the paradigms of conventional exhibition spaces.

Thus, through a combination of theoretical and theoretical and practical work, participants will explore alternatives to the white cube as the dominant model in the art and experiment with new forms of exhibition design and collaborative creation.

The workshop is aimed at artists, curators, architects, designers, students and the public interested in the relationship between art, space and community.

Interested parties can register by emailing info@ses12naus.org.

The activity is priced at 10 euros.

About ‘Instant City

The Instant City was a social and architectural experiment, designed as an unprecedented ephemeral city.

The project was carried out within the framework of the ICSID congress, an event that brought together designers, architects and artists from all over the world. This experiment stood out for its collective and participatory approach, where attendees built a pneumatic city using 15,000 m² of polyvinyl chloride, a million staples and basic technical knowledge offered by a group of young architects. It was organized in flexible modules interconnected through a system of ventilation and overpressure, generating an initially geometric structure, which over time was adapted and transformed as the inhabitants designed new configurations, in a clear experimentation exercise on the possibilities of space. During her residency at Ses12naus, Raquel Victoria intends not only to deepen her research on new architectural and curatorial forms within the framework of her PhD, but also to contribute through discussions on ephemeral and collaborative exhibition spaces, including the workshop ‘Reimagining the Instant City’., which will also be the last public activity of 2024 proposed by the foundation.
