Port Authority of the Balearic Islands announced with great fanfare a few months agothe incorporation in the port of Ibiza of 75 litter garbage cans made from recycled fishing nets as a “commitment to the circular economy” and with the aim of caring for the environment.
However, this politically correct discourse collides with reality: one of its main subcontractors, Serveo, fails to comply with something as basic as correctly treating the garbage generated and mixed after it is separated at source. The double standard of hypocrisy.
As advanced by La Voz de Ibiza, the contracting company Serveo Services has been in the eye of the storm not only because of the terrible working conditions conditions that its workers have to face every day, but also because of its poor mismanagement in the treatment of waste.. The Madrid-based firm has won the 2022 tender for Lot 1 of the Maintenance of the common areas of the port of Ibiza for a period of 12 months, with an extension for the same period. As recorded on the site of the General State Administration, the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility had put forward a base budget of €1,620,007.43 excluding taxes.
It won with a bid of 1,365,014.58 euros.
In addition, the company has also been awarded three other tenders in this case in the Botafoc maritime station for maintenance and cleaning.
The latter first on a provisional basis and then also for a period of one year.
The three contracts total 1,269,994.74 euros. Pruning waste in common containers.
The famous waste garbage cans
On the website of the Port Authority of the Balearics published on May 6th that it has renewed “part of its urban furniture in the port of Ibiza with the incorporation of 75 new litter garbage cans made from recycled material extracted from the sea“.
Specifically, these containers have been created from old disused fishing nets.
The action is contemplated within the cleaning and maintenance service that Serveo has in the ports of Ibiza and La Savina.
While the company that has been in charge of manufacturing the garbage cans with recycled material has been Fábregas.
“The renovation of this urban furniture is a commitment of the port agency for the circular economy and environmental awareness. In addition, it is an action that is part of the port-city integration”, have argued from the APB. This magical and perfect theory collides head-on with the bad practices of the APB subcontractor for the cleaning and maintenance service of the port of Ibiza, which collects all the garbage that is separated at source from recycling garbage cans and pruning waste in industrial bags and deposits them in the containers of rejection. And from there to the landfill in breach of all regulations and the most elementary common sense in an absurd and outrageous practice.
This situation has been documented by the workers with photos and videos, which are in the possession of this media.
Serveo
Company sources have told La Voz de Ibiza that they are certified by ISO 14001 on environmental management, which implies “frequent controls and audits”.
On the other hand, Serveo subcontracts to a company “which is an expert ad hoc in waste treatment. In the case of the port of Ibiza, they have confirmed to La Voz de Ibiza that there is a contracted company “that is dedicated to waste management, collection and classification of waste”.
Serveo has refused to reveal the identity of this collaborating company.
Denies the documented facts
“This complaint does not correspond to reality,” said sources from the contracting company. However, the workers support their allegations with evidence. “We collect waste and throw it in the black bin: plastics, bottles, tree pruning, etc…“.
Presume commitment
For its part, the company promotes itself as a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact, “consolidating our commitment to a sustainable business model that addresses global challenges.
United Nations Global Compact“consolidating our commitment to a sustainable business model that addresses global challenges”.The organization also “integrates the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the company’s strategy to guarantee that
in our growth we contribute to the 2030 Agenda and move forward in a sustainable manner.”
In addition, they say they put the “focus on decarbonization, operational efficiency, cleaner and healthier services, driving innovation. We work every day on promoting equality and safe environments, on hiring vulnerable groups, as well as on a governance model that integrates our entire supply chain. Our track record is backed by solid management systems in health and safety, quality, lean management and environment.
We also hold the SGE-21 certification, which accredits us as an ethical and socially responsible organization, and the efr certification, which endorses us as a conciliatory, egalitarian and inclusive company”.
What about the 2030 Agenda?
All this situation unveiled by La Voz de Ibiza in the APB facilities goes against the “action plan for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda towards a Spanish Strategy for Sustainable Development” promoted by the Government of Spain.
Among the environmental challenges, it states that “Spain is very vulnerable to climate change and therefore must work on mitigating the risks and adapting to it”.
To this end, it seeks to reduce the negative environmental impact of cities“paying special attention to air quality and waste management“, among other points.
For this reason, the “improvement of the management systems for this type of waste” is proposed .
“The most important challenge in relation to the current data is the adoption of policies to drive towards a circular economy that raises awareness among the different agents generating waste, of the interest, not only from an environmental point of view but also from an economic point of view, of preventing the generation of waste and promoting recycling, recovery and reuse strategies,” states the document agreed with the rest of the autonomous communities.
“At the municipal level, the challenge is also to advance and improve the management of this waste, integrating these policies and measures in circular economy strategies.
Despite the progress made, it is necessary to advance and improve the behavior of the actors in the monitoring and control measures, as well as in the incorporation of the culture and environmental management requirements of to business organizations, including the awareness of workers and managers and public administrations”, it states.
