Two of the ten wastewater treatment plants in Ibiza registered last year anoutput flowof poorly treated water, with no improvement in relation to 2022. As reported by IbizaPreservationof this total flow, 99.94 percent came from the Ibiza sewage treatment plant and 0.06 percent from the Sant Joan sewage treatment plant. The problem of treated water with salinity above the limits required for agricultural reuse also persisted, as only two treatment plants generated reusable flow throughout the year in 2023. Ninety-one percent of the treated water exceeded the salinity and conductivity limits for agricultural reuse. The IbizaPreservation Sustainability Observatory has completed its 2023 Sustainability Report, which highlights a steady increase in population, tourism and transport indicators. As reported by the entity in a press conference, the text collects the data referring to last year in 50 indicators related to 11 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Among other figures, the presentation pointed out a population increase of 13.4 percent in the last 10 years and an increase in the Human Pressure Index, which reached an average annual value of 218,384 people in 2023. In parallel to the increase in population, a record number of tourists arrived in Ibiza in 2023, a total of 3,379,359, which is 10.2 percent more than in 2022. In addition, the report reveals that last year a total of 548,969 cruise passengers disembarked on the island. This number represents a significant increase over 2019, when Ibiza received 395,235 cruise passengers. Also last year saw the highest air passenger flow in the entire series studied (1990-2023), while there was a 5.1 percent increase in terms of the movement of people in maritime transport. Maritime freight transport continues to increase and reached its highest since 2006, increasing by 5.7 percent over 2022. In addition, land public transport use also surpassed all years on record since 2017 in terms of users, surpassing 6 million, up 36.9 percent over 2022.
Waste collection
According to the report, last year 117,416.9 tons of municipal collection were accounted for, representing a growth of 1.5 percent over 2022 (115,682.2 tons) and 22.2 percent over 2010 (96,110.9 tons). On a positive note, and according to the information provided by the Consell, in 2023 in the collection of household waste an improvement in the percentage was obtained, reaching 32.2 percent of the total, the highest proportion so far. This improvement is due to the significant progress in the collection of organic matter, which reached 10,254 tons, an increase of 9.7 percent over the previous year.
